Requirements & Application for Sponsorship

[12/11/2025 Update: Unless more sponsors sign up, I likely can’t get any more children sponsored. If I do get more sponsors, I’ll update this message.]

Eligibility Requirements for Adopt-a-Family

To qualify for my Adopt-a-Family program, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Employment or Enrollment
You must currently work at ChristianaCare as an employee or contractor (full-time or part-time). If you’re on FMLA or another approved leave, you still qualify. If you’re part of Visiting Nurse Association (VNA), you also qualify.

  2. Parent or Legal Guardian Status
You must be the parent or legal guardian of the child(ren) and/or share the same household.

  3. Eligible Children
Only your biological, adopted, or legally-guarded children living with you are eligible. Nieces, nephews, godchildren, stepchildren, or your partner’s children are not eligible unless you are their legal guardian or they live under the same roof.

  4. Financial Need
You must affirm that financial challenges prevent you from purchasing holiday gifts for your child(ren).

  5. Coaching Requirement
You must complete a financial coaching appointment with me via Zoom before I can match you with a sponsor. An exception will be made if you’ve already had a Zoom consultation with me on or after October 1, 2025.

  6. Age and Household Limits
Only children ages 18 or younger are eligible for sponsorship, with a limit of six (6) children per household.

Priority and Program Notes

  • Until December 1, priority will be given to families who have not previously been sponsored through my program.

  • Beginning December 1, the program will open to families who have been sponsored before, with priority given to those sponsored the fewest number of times.

  • This approach isn’t meant to be punitive, but rather to balance limited resources while encouraging ongoing participation in financial coaching. Many repeat caregivers don’t engage in coaching during the year and tend to resurface around the holidays hoping to be sponsored. While there are often valid reasons for that, it can give the impression that the program is being viewed primarily as a free gift initiative rather than a partnership designed to promote lasting financial stability.
